A note from BuildASoil

Over the last 13+ years, we've grown into a much better company — and a lot of that growth came directly from our critical reviews. Every 1, 2, or 3-star review on this page taught us something. New formulations, better packaging, improved shipping, clearer instructions, stronger customer support — almost all of it traces back to a customer who took the time to tell us what wasn't working.

If you haven't tried BuildASoil in a while — or you tried us early on and it didn't go great — we'd genuinely love another shot. We get better every year, and we have the receipts to prove it. See what's new at buildasoil.com →

Not really sure I really need this, but the pop up recommendation sure made me feel like i did. I mostly have no idea whats happening in my soil, but BAS inputs have always been worth the cost for the harvest i get

Added this to poor draining soil and was left with straight mud, worse than what I started with: "A Parboiled Rice Hulls (PBH) disadvantage that cannot be overcome is their shape. PBH resemble the shape of a tiny canoe with a long slender pore shape. If a growing mix’s other components are poor quality, such as a peat with a lot of fines, these fines can fill the PBH pore space and actually hinder drainage and increase the water holding capacity of a mix. A growing mix is only as a good as its components. PBH cannot work independently of the other mix components. The highest quality PBH are no match for a mix composed of poor quality peat, bark fines and other materials that are commonly available. Quality raw materials at their earliest stages lay the foundation for growing success."

Good consistency product but the bag was anaerobic when first opening. There were delays in the delivery time that likely contributed to being airtight for too long but the bag should be designed to let more airflow in so the product does not go Anaerobic so easily. Currently airing out before applying to my soil and using for teas.

I just put down on my beds a couple of days ago! It was totally different from the first two purchases over the last couple years! No white stuff! Seemed like less as well! Maybe you could let us know when you change it ! At least I wouldn't have been thrown off by the difference! Other than that I have no collected data for you! At this time I'm going to plant my next round in a few days!

I expected bran which which is defined as “ the partly ground husk of wheat or other grain, separated from flour meal by sifting.” What I received was a fine powder that was useless for my intended purchase. If it’s bran powder, you should say it’s powder.

I found the barley straw mulch to be messy and difficult to work with. I hadn't seen the video where Jeremy says wetting it helps to cut down on dust and likely helps it be a little more flexible. Once I had it on my 15 gallon fabric pots it was okay. It did improve the soils ability to retain water some. I didn't end up using it for long. It was just a hassle for me. Also made assessing the soils moisture level more difficult. You need to move the straw out of the way to get your finger down in the soil an inch or so and then cover it back up which usually led to more and more straw getting on the floor of the tent. I'm currently trying some red cedar wood shavings as mulch instead. The straw may work out better in a bed of soil. But for the pots I'll take a pass. G.

I purchased the 3.0 soil to transplant sum plants into a bigger pot and before I used it I ph checked the soil with my direct soil measurer from hanna instruments and found the soil was siting at 6.2 when I brought this up to there support team instead of trying to fix my problem that told me the ph was in perimeters they set which if you ever looked at a ph availably chart shows that it is slightly acidic. altho its not a problem immediately it means you'll have to ph correct the soil faster than if the soil was siting around 6.8 which would be the optimal starting ph. I attached a picture showing a soil test I did of the 3.0 two months after growing in a 5 gallon pot watering at a 7.0ph threw the cycle.

The sprayer drips a lead at the hose where it connects to the handle of the wand and there is chipped paint. No matter how tight I get it I cant stop it so I'm going to try thread tape. Obviously this is a manufacture problem. Makes me wonder whether these are 2nd quality

Decent product but lack of screening of material. I found a giant bolt in my 2 pound bag while building my soil. Not sure if it’s a B.A.S issue with repacking or a OLY issue.

Good product overall but I found a few plastic pieces in my 2 pound bag. Few plastic bits are to be expected as it has some waste products in it. But I was shocked when I pulled a bolt out of my soil as I was mixing it. That is unacceptable.

I don’t think buildasoil should offer services to areas of the shipping is more than the actual soil. Maybe invest in other distributors… preferably in Texas

Know what your getting before buying, would be the perfect product but three main downsides, must have a 2.4g Chanel on WiFi network and cannot use more than 15A in total for all four outlets I think is pretty stupid considering how much it limits the ability to control many products some bas promotes. Please be aware and also you can’t only use one type of device per grow hub, example you can’t use two fans on one strip. If they manage to fix these issues it would be the most flawless device to use with absolute ease

I ordered "Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss," but they sent me their "Base Blend Recipe." I communicated with Zach Branson via email for two days. Explaining what had happened. I sent a picture of the "Base Blend Recipe" that I had received and Zach said, "The link you have shared is our Base Blend Recipe, which, by the picture of the contents of the bag, is not what you received." So he's calling me a liar. He told me that they don't sell that, but it is on their website. The he told me that, "The label right under the bag branding that clearly states Fluffed Peat Moss." They can't believe that one of them had shipped me the wrong product or maybe Zach thinks that the label is capable of boxing the right product. I don't know if they are dishonest, not to bright, or they are in Colorado where pot is legal, so who knows. Since I am unable to try the product I ordered, "Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss," I can't comment on wheather their products are good or not. But I can say that Zach Branson is not a person I would want to deal with and will never purchase anything from them again. There are many places to purchase what they sell, so beware if you go to buildasoil.com. Build A Soil is probably a great company, but I wouldn't recommend ordering anything from them online.l

Love this company, love this product. However. I ordered this during the Black Friday event. It shipped during the big feeeze for Christmas 2022. It arrived as a frozen block. So I figured let it thaw, put a dab of molasses in it to feed the microbes and allow them a few weeks to recover… the odor is a fraction of what it was previous times I ordered. I hate to leave a negative review on a product I love but this is the reason. Ferments are great but I don’t think shipping them when it’s so cold similar to insects is a good idea.

I noticed none of the benefits I typically see with potassium silicate. Research has not backed this amendment up so I would stick to wollastonite or rice hulls (already in a lot of BAS mixes). Not very compatible with my soils as a top dress. No doubt some bacteria will fix some silicon from this amendment, but why not work with something proven? Here is a paper comparing various silicon amendments: Silicon Soil Amendments for Suppressing Powdery Mildew on Pumpkin (2016) Wyenandt et al.

I thought this version of the mulch was expensive for what it was. i purchased this hoping to get some blue oyster mushrooms from it, then use it as mulch since its so expensive. but the bag was loosly packed and must have been innoculated immediately before shipping becasue there was no mycellium in it. i put it in my closet to see how it would grow over a few months. but still for this price point, you would think it would be a fully colonized tightly packed bag. The logs used to better quality for our purposes in my opinion.

I had an amazing grow with lots of microbial life but unfortunately all of my ratios of NPK tested extremely low for the 6 Cubic feet kit. Thus, I had a vey low and poor yield. Great for vegging and cloning though because of the high potential for microbial life. Flavor was okay but nothing amazing.

I ordered this for the Black Friday they had in November, they shipped it during the big freeze we had during Christmas, and it arrived as a frozen block. I ordered this once last year and the odor was 10x what it was this time. I assume this is something to do with the fact it was frozen solid. I called BAS and said it was an act of god and there was nothing they could do about it. Put a dab of molasses in it and let it sit for a week. Still not that stinky but it is what it is.
