A note from BuildASoil
Over the last 13+ years, we've grown into a much better company — and a lot of that growth came directly from our critical reviews. Every 1, 2, or 3-star review on this page taught us something. New formulations, better packaging, improved shipping, clearer instructions, stronger customer support — almost all of it traces back to a customer who took the time to tell us what wasn't working.
If you haven't tried BuildASoil in a while — or you tried us early on and it didn't go great — we'd genuinely love another shot. We get better every year, and we have the receipts to prove it. See what's new at buildasoil.com →

I only gave it three stars because I did not know how to use them and when I wrote a note into build a soil, nobody ever emailed me back with the answer so I had to figure out myself still don't know how to use them so you still get a three. Since I didn't get an order on call from builders soil, I went ahead and put my seeds in the pucks and put them in a cup without soil around them, and the roots were coming out so fast they were self pruning themselves, so I put them in the soil and I lost five out of 13.

I only gave it a 3 star rating because I have nothing to compare it to. This is only my 3rd attempt at gardening so my opinion basis is limited. Was it great? It didn't kill anything for starters. So I win. I split the 12lb. bag between four 5gal. fabric pots after about 5-6 weeks when the initial soil has settled some. It has an unusual aroma I haven't smelled since I was a kid but, my dog likes it. The plants aren't finished yet so I can't say the dressing will be a benefit to the end but the new growth it inspired short term at least was, well, inspirational! Thank You. I also cannot answer the questions below. Appearance? Moisture? Consistency? Brown/damp/mushy. I don't know how that fits with "Poor to Excellant" as choices.

The barley seed is supposed to be malted, it’s not, just regular barley seed. So false advertising for sure and not the same advantage I would assume but I do love sprouting my own seeds just wish the label was more honest cuz this is clearly sprouting barley not malted barley. 3 stars so I’m not a jerk

I could've bought a whole cf for less than I did the half Cf and I feel like it wasn't shown clearly that that's what I was doing. I thought I bought the cf of pumice because it cost less than the hall cf. I was told there was nothing they would do and some other obscure information about the transaction. Suffice to say I won't likely be ordering from this company in the near future

It was split at the seam of the paper bag you package it in. It poured into the box you shipped it in and was all over leaking out of corners. I would recommend placing in a bag. I bet about 4-8 cups were missing.

Ive purchased the 4 pack about a dozen times over the years. Its not the same as it used to be, 3 logs didnt innoculate for me at all, when i called BAS they told me to call email the manufacturer, which confused me because i thought they made it. The thing is, this isnt the first time. It sucks paying 40 bucks for a bag of wet straw. of the 50-60 logs ive ordered, at least 30% didnt innoculate. Im not a stickler so I kept ordering i figured hey organics nothings perfect, but the last time was the... last straw for me.... (ill see myself out) They are making a KILLING on these and i felt the least they could have done was reship some. (yes i put them in a cool dark closet when they first arrive)

I bought two of these as gifts. The shirts themselves are high quality - not over the top amazing, but definitely decent. The print on each of them lasted maybe 3 cold washes before it was entirely gone. For the price of the shirts I was definitely expecting better.

Not to impressed. It was very woody and felt nothing like BU's Blend. BU's blend is fluffy and rich, not woody. The compost you sent me felt more like mulch.

Didn't even check for this product being made in America. But it's not unfortunately. I will use it but it's not the quality I was looking for!
The price was around 13 bucks so not worth returning by the time shipping is figured in.

I have used this product many times and use to really like it. I feel like something went wrong and maybe it wasnt ready for sale. I thought there was a dead mouse or something in there the smell was so rotten. Never had that problem before, I actually had to remove it from the beds, i tried to use it on and had throw it away because whole house was rank with the smells from this stuff. Any ideas why it was like this? was there a change in recipe? I loved this product in the past and now im afraid to reorder because i cant afford be throwing out product like this?

Bought some from my local grow store, 10lbs.
Lots of chunks, hard stuff that looks like rocks.
Several different colors of hard pieces.
Pieces of alfalfa the size of large peas.
Never used before, is this normal?
Should I do something to break it up?
Seems like that would be frustrating...
Thanks in advance for your insight!

on BuildASoil Craft Blend - Nutrient Pack →As a lifelong student/practitioner of fermentation I'd suggest that this is, in fact, Putrefied Watermelon Extract. If you were thinking a FFJ/FPJ, don't. If you're thinking of a typical temp controlled LAB + plant matter ferment, don't. This is closer to a flyblown JLF that spent weeks in the sun, uncovered. If Watermelon Grease Trap is what you're looking for, you're in luck. I can't see using this, myself.
