A note from BuildASoil

Over the last 13+ years, we've grown into a much better company — and a lot of that growth came directly from our critical reviews. Every 1, 2, or 3-star review on this page taught us something. New formulations, better packaging, improved shipping, clearer instructions, stronger customer support — almost all of it traces back to a customer who took the time to tell us what wasn't working.

If you haven't tried BuildASoil in a while — or you tried us early on and it didn't go great — we'd genuinely love another shot. We get better every year, and we have the receipts to prove it. See what's new at buildasoil.com →

I love having an amendment that fills the gap that BAS’s soil recipes are oddly lacking on. I don’t know exactly why BAS’s soils are missing key micronutrients, but regardless, this is good to have. However, it’s a nightmare for me to use it every single time. It constantly clogs my sprayer. I have to unclog the tip every 30 seconds or so when applying this stuff. It’s not quite micronized enough for sprayers. When I need to use it which is every 1 to 2 weeks I’m going to start using it in a rain style watering can. That sucks because I can’t control the soil coverage as well as I can with a sprayer, but I have to figure something out to fill those nutrient gaps in the soil. Good stuff, just a pain to use.

I know right! We actually add lot's of this right into our 3.0 Recipe soil but with such high organic matter it's helpful to have a way to add more instead of trying to frontload so much. The results are better. We get it!! We wish the humic was totally water soluble as well, Dr. Faust often told me if we needed to use on farm or foliar to do a hot water extraction of the micronutrients and then let it all settle. This way just the chunks of humic are left at bottom and all the micronutrients are in the water. Hope that helps

Does not measure 20 in at the bottom it only measures 16 and 3/4 in so it's not a 20 inch pot

Got it to prevent pm then noticed I had thrips after first spray. So sprayed twice after that but not back to back and waited and still see thrips. It's hard to get every leave so I can't say that it's not working and I haven't done a lot of research on how to use this either besides mixing 3oz to a gallon in my pump sprayer and trying to shoot every leaf from the top and underneath, while in the dark.... While the plants are trellised . Wish there was like a smoke bomb that could kill pests and be ok for early flowering plants.

I ended up thinking 'more is better' and added about 3 inches to the top of my pot, this was added In the first week of flower too. The problem with that was when I watered only the top half of the pot was now getting wet and after 1 week of this (especially during the fast growth during stretch), all my plants began having issues with the lower half of the pot not getting water down there. So just be sure the day you first water in this product that you water heavy, to be sure the whole pot is saturated and avoid deficiencies like I had. For an organic soil smaller pot situation like mine, this isn't really an ideal product. I feel if your indoors in pots of soil, you should be using 7 gallon pots, or if your using 5s you should flip right after final transplant.

Dang so sorry! I wear 9.5 in fitted and this fits me well. Do you think there was a mix-up in sizing? I've not had any other issues yet. Thanks!

Seems to be A Lot less liquid soluble than previous orders. Used it a lot a really liked it but this seems unusual.

There is natural variability in the raw humic acid component from Faust but the micronutrients contained within are water soluble and it's totally okay to have some humic left in the bottom. We will check into some of the raw bags and follow up with Faust to confirm. It's totally possible your bag had more larger solids than usual being that it's natural and not perfectly uniform. We care and really do think you are still getting the benefit you are after. That being said, quality control is the top of the list and we will investigate. Hope you have a great run!! P.S. Some people use hot water to extract the BIG 6. I just toss it in my usual water, but figured I would suggest it.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky few who got a bag of wet straw. The amount of material was fine, and if it had fruited it would have been excellent. However, even after several weeks in an environmentally controlled room there was only the faintest hint of white, and eventually slimy green. Whatever, life goes on, just w/o any mushrooms ;-P

I don't know the product well cuz I don't know what to look for in the plant as far as Horticultural aloe does for it I know it's healthy for the plant. But overall the product I rated it a three because I don't have experience with it is enough to rate it any higher

The Clover Cover Crop does prevent weeds from growing. It is a very nice, healthy, clover field : 100 feet by 50 feet. There are NO weeds! However, I had called and asked, what now? Previously, I was told to till my garden one last time really good. Plant the Clover. Now I have a wonderful “NO TILL” garden. Now what? If I want to plant my garden with something, how do I precede? I am not tilling any longer because it is a NO TILL garden. So do I mow down the clover with my lawn mower, then plant my garden? But the clover will take over my garden seeds. So do I keep pulling out the clover so my garden can grow? When I called you to ask, I told be you sell several books. That I need to purchase the books, read them, then figure it out on my own. Really?

The original ones before BAS started making it themselves were double the size and packed right. Was plenty to cover 6, 45 gallon pots. Now I just put down a new one and it covered 4, but not how I would like them to be covered. I could understand if maybe the mentioned it was less and it was priced accordingly but they are priced more and don’t mention it’s way less. I let the bag sit for 2 weeks and it was barely inoculated, just big balls of saw dust that were inoculated with some straw. Now I gave it 3 stars because it’s still decent mulch, and I need to buy another one in order to complete the job. They should either add way more straw, or make it cheaper though.

If you want to spread some in your soil as pest management it works but dont let the mustard seed meal touch the stalk of your vegetables it will kill them. The mycelium that eat the mustard will also start eating any plant material that is touching the seed meal.

I liked the older version of this better when the logs were used and had a ton of mycelium. Now these arrive as wet straw with little to no visible microbial life, which is disappointing. It’s nice to use these right away when you get it rather than having to wait a week or two for colonization, but whatever. It works.

Still a great product ! I think I'm spoiled since I purchased the original Q , before there was 60 and 20 . The only reason for the 4 stars is because it's not as good as the 60 ! I use alot more Q to get the foam to really get goin , as apposed to just a sprinkle of the original. Haven't decided wht I will do when I need more sappanin .

I just put down on my beds a couple of days ago! It was totally different from the first two purchases over the last couple years! No white stuff! Seemed like less as well! Maybe you could let us know when you change it ! At least I wouldn't have been thrown off by the difference! Other than that I have no collected data for you! At this time I'm going to plant my next round in a few days!

I found the barley straw mulch to be messy and difficult to work with. I hadn't seen the video where Jeremy says wetting it helps to cut down on dust and likely helps it be a little more flexible. Once I had it on my 15 gallon fabric pots it was okay. It did improve the soils ability to retain water some. I didn't end up using it for long. It was just a hassle for me. Also made assessing the soils moisture level more difficult. You need to move the straw out of the way to get your finger down in the soil an inch or so and then cover it back up which usually led to more and more straw getting on the floor of the tent. I'm currently trying some red cedar wood shavings as mulch instead. The straw may work out better in a bed of soil. But for the pots I'll take a pass. G.

The sprayer drips a lead at the hose where it connects to the handle of the wand and there is chipped paint. No matter how tight I get it I cant stop it so I'm going to try thread tape. Obviously this is a manufacture problem. Makes me wonder whether these are 2nd quality

Good product overall but I found a few plastic pieces in my 2 pound bag. Few plastic bits are to be expected as it has some waste products in it. But I was shocked when I pulled a bolt out of my soil as I was mixing it. That is unacceptable.
