Unlike the pumice the black lava has a lot of dust in it. Be nice if it was screened. Trying to get all the ingredients to make a good bonsai mix. Glad you have the pumice and lava. Still looking for a good substitute for akadama. Any ideas?

I am in the process of building a new batch of soil (additional, not replacement). This is for both medicinal and vegetable plants. Making about 150 gallons. Love the BAS products for anything I grow which will be entering my body. I can already taste the tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage; in addition to the medicine. Just waiting on my 150 gallon Grassroots pot coming from you for mixing. Jeremy, you and your team are phenomenal!

I've gotten lava rock before that was full of dust and particulate, this is pretty quality material.

Good size, hard to find. Wish I could get another amount in-between the cubic yard and the 1/2 cubic foot but still great rocks and price will order again either way. Used for a few big cactus soil.

Good but had several large clumps of a mud-like substance mixed in.

I’d recommend just buying the full cubic foot. You don’t save much by ordering less. Was kinda disappointed with the amount in the bag compared to the full cubic foot size

Description says "looks like small/medium perlite" but there are some pieces as big as 3/4 " Other than that its a pretty good deal.

Some of the large pieces I don't care for but everything else is fine.

It's a perfect product for folks who cultivate plants like Ariocarpus and friends; it's a staple in my soil mixing for these types of plants :) What I love most about it is its suitability for seedlings and young plants; it's the best size I've been able to get my hands on!

Wayyyy better than perlite I’m definitely buying again.

I have a Dracaena marginata which is very finicky -- it only wants black lava rock as its soil amendment. (This Dracaena and I have been together for over 20 years, so it has made its wants known over time!) BuildaSoil is absolutely the best place to buy this. High quality product, and I honestly can't believe they offer free shipping! I will never shop anywhere else.

This is exactly the perfect size you need to be able to put some of it in the soil instead of just on top.

Based on the Build a Soil suggestion, I purchased the small black lava rock as an alternative for perlite in my succulent & cactus potting mix. I've repotted a couple of plants that I recently obtained from a big box store, and they are doing great in the new formulation.

For several months now, I have used Build-a-Soil's black lava rock to repot my cacti and euphorbia collection. All of my plants have benefited from switching to a mineral-based mix, which is made up of the lava rock and Build-a-Soil's pumice. I especially like the fact that this lava-rock comes in a variety of sizes and contains lots of powder, which serves as a fantastic fertilizer.

Since black lava rock doesnt break down like rice hulls this stuff is as good as it gets for no-till. Expensive shipping but I couldn't find it local. Buy once and be happy.

I don’t think this will help much for the intended use of adding aeration to a mix. The particles are way too small and fine, I have a feeling they just made my soil even more dense. I’m sure they add some valuable trace minerals and silica, though.

I mixed this with some pumice to layer the bottom of a 100 gal bed and it liked the quality of both products quite a lot, I would do it again.

I like to use this lava rock to add more texture to my soil. Great aeration component!

I built a simple.soil recipe using materials from Build-A-Soil with rice hulls, black lava rock and the craft blend along with some compost I had available. My tomato plants are huge. 3 of the 9 are at 6 feet. These three received larger pots and the blend mentioned above while smaller containers received a premade potting mix from a different organization. I also used this blend in several 5 gallon containers and those plants are at a hearty 3.5 feet. All of these plants have tons of flowers all over them!. I am only feeding these with compost tea every three weeks. Thank you Build-A-Soil! Customer for life for sure. Mike H

Great product for aeration, I screen out my containers and amend the medium at the end.of the grow. The Lava gets reused.with no issues.

Overall this is a great product, with all the benefits described, although I take issue with the idea of using this as one's only aeration amendment. The particle size was quite a bit smaller than I expected, which is perhaps just a mistake on my part, and I should've bought the larger size. This product is only slightly larger in size than the biochar, and seems to disappear when mixed into the soil. I added A LOT of rice hulls to my mix to get it to the right consistency. I probably will not buy this again, unless perhaps to use as a top layer of "mulch" on smaller containers to prevent fungus gnats and uneven drying.

I mixed this up with some pumice and rice hulls and my plants love the texture of the soil and mineral additions it adds. I just took some plain organic soil and threw in some worm casting and lava rock and plants went from yellow green to deep forest green in a week!

These lava rocks are great! Its just what I ordered and they got here very quickly! I will definitely be ordering again!

It’s impossible to pull out a handful that looks like any of those pictures. I filtered a half cubic foot of it through an ⅛” screen and got 2 gallons of fines. I might top dress a couple of tablespoons of that every now and then.

Love that the lava rock doesn't float to the top like perlite does. Made a soil mix with this as well as rice hulls and the nutrient pack, and my plants couldn't be happier.

These lava rocks are the perfect size for aeration and blow perlite (even chunky) out the water. Shipping cost more than the product, but, since I don't have to crush them myself, it's totally worth it.
