A note from BuildASoil

Over the last 13+ years, we've grown into a much better company — and a lot of that growth came directly from our critical reviews. Every 1, 2, or 3-star review on this page taught us something. New formulations, better packaging, improved shipping, clearer instructions, stronger customer support — almost all of it traces back to a customer who took the time to tell us what wasn't working.

If you haven't tried BuildASoil in a while — or you tried us early on and it didn't go great — we'd genuinely love another shot. We get better every year, and we have the receipts to prove it. See what's new at buildasoil.com →

The plants responded well to it generally, but there are an awful lot of wood chips in the bag, I'm guessing from the O.M. compost. The problem is, the thicker wood chips and sticks are not composted. Difficult to impossible to break them open (composted chips should be soft or crumbly), and fresh looking wood inside. I've never seen this in the Malibu compost, so maybe a recipe change?

I order it previously and received a clear package of rove beetles and another clear package of steinerma. This time I received a small white bag with powder that had nematodes in them. Completely different then what I wanted.

The stuff they have at Camelot is a completely different animal. It is a lot better grade it’s more money but it’s worth it I’m still having a hard time with the stuff that I got from you guys my plants want to die. I’ve got one right now turning yellow. I think yours needs washed more and we did wash it again but I don’t wash the stuff from Camelot at all it’s already clean clean clean

Ours is Unbuffered! We only offer RAW where as most of the Coco Coir that comes on the market is charged with Chilean Nitrate or other fertilizer chemicals to help balance the coir. When using coir to mix soil, we take care of that using Organic products, but if using this coco straight up, you'll have to account for that. I Hope this helps!!! Thanks for the feedback for sure.

The Beauvaria Bassiana has worked to knock back the root aphids but not eliminate. I’ve applied drench in coco every three days for about ten days and there are still flyers in the garden.

Maybe I got a bad batch or old, but this stuff is very hard to sprout. I’ve never had issues germinating anything, let alone corn. I’ll keep trying but I think it was a bad batch.

I haven’t seen any benefits or turnaround in deficiencies with this product, foliar and soil drench. Mixed with the coconut powder and now my plants are stunted with a calcium deficiency and some other mobile nutrient.

Yikes! Might have been a to little too late. This product works very well but it's not always the answer. Right off hand I have a few suggestions, but without asking a whole bunch of questions I can't be sure. If you want some more guidance please create a ticket at support.buildasoil.com thanks!

I like the extract but I used it in my dryed out farm farm ocean forest and it was hydrophobic as fuck and it has had to even light sprinkled soil drenches and it is still turning hydrophobic and I even have state mulch on top of my soil as well as a white dutch clover cover crop

I much prefer the living mulch straw log. The straw is a smaller more usable size and also better texture.

After watching Jeremy’s video about the mustard seed I am not sure if I want to use it do to it’s tendency to burn the plants. I’m not to well versed in gardening but have be following the “Build a Soil way” and it’s been working for me. However, I believe I will air in the side of caution and not use it until I’m able to better understand what effects it could have on my plants.

The pumice was OK, but there were not enough smaller particles in the 3/8" x 1/4 " ! cu. ft. bag. I tought that I would get somewhere around a 50/50 mixture, and the pumice I received was almost entirely the 3/8 " size.

I do not recommend this product I have tests proving it drops PH way more anyone would ever think. Ruined a batch of seedlings I grown for years and no issues until this. Test your PH after adding or throw in trash waste of money up to you to me it’s not worth adding into the water could kill microbes 🦠 how drastically it drops PH when added you must use 7.5ph then use Q sparingly as a PH down 😂

Yo! It's only 1/8tsp per gallon. Your test is like 10000 times overkill. Besides that, the buildasoil way does NOT include PH'ing your water. Hope that helps. This absolutely will not ruin any seedlings.

So the product does it's primary goal well in making the water "wetter" as they say. That's what got the 3 stars. However, I picked this product up to help with a fungus gnat issue. BAS recommended using Dr zymes to get rid of them and the Q to keep them away. I did just that, 2 soil drenches of Dr zymes and have used the Q for each watering since, allowing for the soil to fully dry up before watering in 1 gallon to each 5 gallon pot, no runoff. So I don't believe I'm over watering anymore.. So while the product does act as a good wetting agent, I really haven't noticed any benefit in terms of IPM or plant health/vigor since adding it in. And in that regard, I'm definitely a bit disappointed. It's also a bit of a pain to use because it's such a good wetting agent. The foam will overflow well before you can get 2 gallons into your sprayer. This is definitely a good problem, but still kinda frustrating to have to pause and wipe away foam over and over, making the watering process take much longer, for again...seemingly not much benefit or reason.

Right when I opened the bag I can see many seeds that were unmilled(no big deal). As I looked closer I can see these unmilled seeds were indeed obviously not sprouted so it got me thinking of the quality/germination rate. Being the bag was milled it is impossible to find out so this is purely just my scenario not a bash. All this being said I grinded them down further into a cup of water and threw it into 10 gallons of water, bubbled it and 10 hrs later fed my plants/seedlings with it and the next day had immediate results so the enzymatic potential is great.

Used this product last year milled and this year got it unmilled. When I opened the bag right away I can tell not one seed had ever been sprouted in the bag. This was not a big deal to me besides a bit of time lost but I can sprout the seeds myself and it was 20$. What was confusing and disappointing was the support team. I got no help but an offer for 10% off which is nice but not if I'm confused on the integrity and quality put into the product. I decided to document it all as well but hoping for further clarity and support on the gnarly barley before posting this anywhere else. Thank you.

Seed sprouts from a malting house are done for peak enzyme activity!!! This means they are barely sprouted under very specific temperatures and hold periods. Then they are dried. After this is done the enzymes are peaked and ready. Hope that makes sense. Some seeds can even Re-Sprout after this depending on the variety. I promise they are all professionally sprouted and we pay a lot for this service. If there really is an issue we want to know about it right away and hold our suppliers accountable. Did you get to the bottom of this?

I was pretty underwhelmed by this product. It seemed like it was almost pure peat moss, with very little, if any moisture in it upon arrival. I was hoping to get some extra biology and maybe get lucky with some insects soil but I'm not holding my breath on either of those. I should have scoped it before application to see if the visual inspection matched the microscopy, but I just wanted to be done with it after the initial disappointment.

I thought my tap water with a low ppm of 55 would work in this humidifier given that it features some filtration but to my disappointment this unit spreads a film of white dust everywhere with tap water. I would only recommend distilled or R.O. water through these units, if you run an RO filter and don't mind the water usage it won't bother you. The unit is unacceptable with tap water especially if using around flowering plants or drying product. I am now looking for an evaporative cooling humidifier as I have read that those do not have issues with spreading white dust and film but perhaps I should be running RO water regardless of the unit? Either way if the evaporative cooling units run cleaner and less misty with no chance of any sort of film/dust production I will take that over this.
