How the ingredients actually compare

Ingredient lists are similar at a glance — but the specific choices have real consequences for soil longevity, environmental impact, and how the soil performs over multiple grows. Here's the breakdown.

Aeration: Perlite vs Pumice + Rice Hulls

Fox Farm Happy Frog

Perlite. Floats with watering and breaks down across grow cycles, which is one reason Happy Frog is positioned as a single-cycle mix.

BuildASoil 3.0

Pumice (volcanic stone, structurally stable) and rice hulls (light organic aeration). Designed to hold up across multiple grows.

Biology: Mycorrhizae vs Full microbial diversity + biochar

Fox Farm Happy Frog

Mycorrhizal fungi inoculation and humic acids — a good start on biological activity.

BuildASoil 3.0

Compost and worm castings provide native microbial diversity, plus pre-charged biochar that gives microbes long-term habitat to thrive in. Mineral inputs (basalt, BIG 6 trace minerals) feed microbial activity.

Nitrogen: Bat guano vs Plant-based

Fox Farm Happy Frog

Bat guano is one of the active nitrogen sources. Bat populations in source regions are facing significant pressure.

BuildASoil 3.0

Plant-based amendments — kelp, mustard seed, rice bran, gnarly barley sprouted seed flour — plus fish bone meal. No bat guano.

Designed lifecycle

Fox Farm Happy Frog

A single-grow gentle starter mix. Generally replaced or amended heavily between grows.

BuildASoil 3.0

Designed for indefinite reuse with top-dressing. The same soil can go through multiple grow cycles when maintained.

I traveled from yuma to montrose with a friends tester in a 32oz soda cup filled with coco and gaia greens. Welp day one she toppled over (we had 3 dogs, and 4 humans in 1 car) and lost the entire top layer!!! I could do nothing but leave it on the floor under my wife's feet!!! I put her through the ringer is an understatement. She made it through 4 car rides, a hotel stay, turned away from Mesa Verde for having/being a live cannabis plant, and several storms. Well I am pleased to announce she is now home safely resting in a bed of Build a soil 3.0, and nuh nuh nuh nuh nuuuh She's Lovin It!!

I’ve received 3.0 soil, craft blend, and a few other items. Still too early to tell progress but I will say all products seem very high quality. Soil looks and feels amazing. As a company as a whole I would rate everything excellent. From the “build a soil way” video tutorial in the education section of their website to them always responding to my questions in a very thorough and timely manner, it is just awesome all around! Can’t wait to watch my grow thrive as I’ve been encountering countless issues with store bought soil and liquid salt based nutes. Quality over quantity. Lets go!!
