How the ingredients actually compare

Ingredient lists are similar at a glance — but the specific choices have real consequences for soil longevity, environmental impact, and how the soil performs over multiple grows. Here's the breakdown.

Aeration: Perlite vs Pumice + Rice Hulls

Coast of Maine Stonington Blend

Perlite. Lightweight, floats, degrades across grow cycles.

BuildASoil 3.0

Pumice (volcanic stone — stable, doesn't float, doesn't degrade) plus rice hulls for additional aeration that breaks down beneficially over the grow.

Manure: Composted poultry vs No manure

Coast of Maine Stonington Blend

Composted poultry manure is one of the main amendments. Effective nutrient source; some growers prefer to avoid manure-based fertility for taste, smell, or composting concerns.

BuildASoil 3.0

No manure. Nutrition comes from worm castings, plant-based meals (kelp, mustard seed, rice bran, gnarly barley sprouted seed flour), and fish bone meal.

Marine inputs: Lobster + crab vs Fish bone meal + oyster shell

Coast of Maine Stonington Blend

Lobster shell meal and crab shell meal — regional sourcing advantage for a Maine brand. Strong calcium and chitin content.

BuildASoil 3.0

Fish bone meal and oyster shell flour for calcium and phosphorus. Different sources, similar function.

Mineral and biological depth

Coast of Maine Stonington Blend

Mycorrhizae inoculation plus the amendment profile above.

BuildASoil 3.0

Mineral-heavy: chunky and fine basalt, BIG 6 trace minerals, gypsum, calcium silicate, plus pre-charged biochar. Compost + worm castings supply native microbial diversity.

Lifecycle

Coast of Maine Stonington Blend

Designed for one strong cycle in a 15-gallon+ container.

BuildASoil 3.0

Designed for indefinite reuse with top-dressing — the same soil ecosystem can host multiple consecutive grows.

I traveled from yuma to montrose with a friends tester in a 32oz soda cup filled with coco and gaia greens. Welp day one she toppled over (we had 3 dogs, and 4 humans in 1 car) and lost the entire top layer!!! I could do nothing but leave it on the floor under my wife's feet!!! I put her through the ringer is an understatement. She made it through 4 car rides, a hotel stay, turned away from Mesa Verde for having/being a live cannabis plant, and several storms. Well I am pleased to announce she is now home safely resting in a bed of Build a soil 3.0, and nuh nuh nuh nuh nuuuh She's Lovin It!!

I’ve received 3.0 soil, craft blend, and a few other items. Still too early to tell progress but I will say all products seem very high quality. Soil looks and feels amazing. As a company as a whole I would rate everything excellent. From the “build a soil way” video tutorial in the education section of their website to them always responding to my questions in a very thorough and timely manner, it is just awesome all around! Can’t wait to watch my grow thrive as I’ve been encountering countless issues with store bought soil and liquid salt based nutes. Quality over quantity. Lets go!!
